The Evolution of a Cult can be marked by distinct phases.

1. The Grand Vision

An inspiring figure or coaches propose a revolutionary approach offering a cure for disconnected individuals.

And so it goes. They’re getting ready to confront the system in Australia. Tensions are rising. Smoke is rising from the sidelines. A lone figure, naked, shivering, the slogan POSITIVE INTENT smeared across his chest in chicken blood, has stumbled into view and is being led away under a blanket for a temporary assignment at Derbyshire.

Remember the early days, when everything was fresh? The initial phase, of Bazball without brains.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Team architects promise a new start, optimism ahead, support, success among a group who all believe in the big idea.

What was this thing initially? A team united enjoying success. Tattoos. Forearms. Determination. Peak performance vibes. Of course, The team insist they don’t use the label, amusingly since it’s not recognized, what was that spectacle?

But we know its essence. It’s the player playing a shot so outrageous it defies description. It’s the adrenaline of Ben Stokes at his peak, a demeanor suggesting: thoughtful warrior, beard made of wood, natural look, so authentically Modern Savage you half-expect to look down and see him playing on the ground bare-chested and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the opener often seen speaking publicly, out there looking like a joyful figure formally attired, saying stuff like we’re challenging norms. Certainly, the energy, initially, was only good energy.

3. A New Life

Growth phase. Unity enforced through repetition of key phrases. These principles can appear contradictory to prove commitment.

Does anyone else feel? The backlash, the fury, the feeling of letdown post-defeat seems too strong, unwarranted. The batting collapsed during the match, as is typical there. And now we have this the criticism, the frustration, the perception of the team as a disgrace. The opinion suggests that defeat must be total, they need to lose righteously, to be cleansed, obliterated, overwhelmed by the vengeful purity of the bowler’s action, the low-fi orthodoxies of the bowler, marking his wickets humbly similar to getting a nice new fishing rod. What will this do to them?

4. Hate Bonding

Challenges surface due to setbacks. But the cult cannot admit errors. It turns to hatred of the outside world.

The fact remains, approaching the upcoming game, we have now reached a critical juncture in the journey of this approach. They might succeed overseas in a blur of adrenal disruption. Probably, they could lose just as quickly. In case of defeat it seems we could be witnessing the decline.

Ahead of this, a couple of points worth saying on the topic. In the past, back in those heady early days, of optimism and energy, I wrote an article calling it a phenomenon. Criticism followed, which demonstrated since it’s clear the best way of proving lack of cult status is should followers react defensively denying scrutiny of its truths.

What has happened recently is just as interesting. Opposition to the style is now the trend. Online outrage is widespread, critical analysts, images of frustrated followers overseas cheated out of three days of cricket, reminiscent of investors demanding recourse.

Conversely, there is the broader context of the host’s complex deep-seated frustration with the aggressive tourists, out there saying, the methods you value and have honed as part of your identity from the opposition, it’s just a joke in the end old boy.

Here lies the truth. Everything is a cult. The approach was a phenomenon as the game has its own culture. In fact, English cricket has always been a cult, a clique, an elite gathering, an insular community with two hundred years of tradition and mystery supporting it. It has long been where entry is limited. It’s the British pastime of the nation, the pioneering brand. And guess what, the country is a phenomenon, a structure of hidden ranks, a royal family remains.

The players have been enclosed in this system since childhood. Seeking change, to build a better atmosphere, they are mirroring their past, building another enclosure, an exclusive group, but doing it this time with a modern squad and a coach encouraging individuality if you fit the mold.

Stay present. Embrace challenges. But no matter how fast and far you run, you’re always basically in the same place.
