Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
