Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... Currently.

The creative mastermind did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception

It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories regarding Pluribus. He is striving to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Will the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.

“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, one could always use the classics?

“My dream is Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
