The Red Devils Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
