The people of Israel commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian ceasefire talks continue
Israelis have gathered throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The national leadership postponed state commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to examine the terms of the agreement.
A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an late session of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative explained the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the deal.
He commented that the talks are "challenging and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the both parties.
Key Matters in Talks
- A permanent ceasefire
- The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- Post-war management of the territory
Civilian Feeling
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the assault on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "No place appears as home any longer and until all the hostages are released no one will have peace of mind."
"When we see everyone home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.
Near the leader's home in the capital, people congregated to show their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports 48 remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.
Activist one woman explained: "We must do any agreement required for the hostages to come back home. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."
Research now frequently demonstrate that about the majority of the population want the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of the music event, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.
From that location, the boom of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli bombardment continued.
In the main city, attacks were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, sector and locality districts and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"As the dusk falls, the fear comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, shared.
"We are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, notably my little child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."
Health Emergency
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had accepted the remains of six people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
Nasser hospital in the south region of Khan Younis indicated additional victims had been brought there. An individual was died by Israeli troops while looking for help to the southern area, medics reported.
