Slot Insists He Is Secure and Retains The Club's Backing After PSV Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was expected for doubts to be asked about his position following another convincing defeat versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool suffered their ninth defeat in 12 matches, marking the club's worst streak after being relegated in 1953-54.
They were dominated by the Dutch league champions on a punishing evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I'm fine, I have got significant backing from above,” the coach remarked.
“It would be great to change things and get a victory of course but when you're in a managerial role and underperforming then it's expected that questions are asked.”
He added, “I accept my situation. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a difficult position but it's crucial that we turned it around.”
Conversations with Liverpool Hierarchy
Upon being questioned to provide details on his conversations with the team officials, Slot explained:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive for the squad and to me and we discuss these matters but they don't phone me constantly each day to say they trust me.”
He mentioned, “During our regular exchanges I perceive the confidence. But I haven’t spoken to them since this defeat yet so it remains to be seen.”
Recurring Problems and Player Response
Slot expressed regret over familiar shortcomings from his squad in their Champions League loss, namely missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more forthright in his assessment of the current crisis.
“I haven't got the solutions. Truthfully, I don’t. I'm telling that to everyone,” Jones said.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to think about it. I’m past feeling anger internally. I've reached the stage currently where I simply lack the words.”
He went on, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the side I follow. I'm a supporter, and I've watched Liverpool since I was young.”
“In recent memory, I've not seen a Liverpool team going through a spell such as this with results this poor.”
Jones concluded, “But we continue to wear the emblem on our shirts. And as long as it is taken away, we will always battle.”
“Our aim is to bring this squad back to the top, demonstrate to all once more the values of this club and why people call it the greatest side in the planet.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
