New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD released surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries were reported.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
