Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
