Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
